I had just been diagnosed with leukemia. I barely had time to accept my fate when I received a message from a mysterious being called the Arrow Bringer I was the only one who could help save Aletheia from a great evil. And then I condemned an innocent world to death-because I said no. A few days later, I journeyed into Aletheia after learning the consequences of my actions. That Shawn Lawrence, the closest person I have to a friend, had disappeared into Aletheia. That a king had betrayed his people; that his son had inherited a fallen kingdom. That my new friends have to find hope amidst untold danger. And now we must embark upon a mission to save the world I betrayed.

(Momma G's Husband) I read this book in the course of a long evening - it is, without apology, a thinly veneered Christian allegory - not even the names are much changed (if one is a student of history or languages). The similarities to C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch, ..." are prevalent so much so that the author acknowledges them in the book - a rather effective misdirect in the first half of the novel, I might add. While the theme is the same, the story line shares as much in common with Stephen R Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series as it does with that of the Pevensie siblings (not much).Assuming you bring no strong opposition to the theme, and enjoy stories of fantastic adventures, growing up, combat, and just a bit of magic, you will likely enjoy the book. Its clearly targeted at a YA level, so its neither long nor particularly graphic. At times,I found the point of view a bit cumbersome, the people a bit too trusting, and some pages wasted to dissertation (on the parts of a sailing ship, for instance) unimportant to the story - but as a first book by a new Author, it was a better than average read in this genre.
I would almost certainly buy another book by Ms. Mayer, though Christian Allegories aren't really "my thing" now, anymore than when I read the Narnia books more than three decades ago.

The Aletheian Journeys The Arrow Bringer Lisa Mayer 9781512230864 Books Reviews
Although I'm not a fan of allegory or fantasy of any kind, I liked the premise of this story. The teenage protagonist is dying of an all-too-common form of cancer, and she is adopted. That caught my attention and made me want to find out how her sad circumstances would play into her adventure. The author gave more background information in places than I think the reader needed; some of it could've been worked in more gradually. And most YA I read has a crisper writing style, but as I mentioned, I don't typically read this type of YA. All in all, a good-vs-evil battle, innocent romance, and family drama make this a story that teen fans of books like the Narnia and Lord of the Rings series should enjoy.
I love The Arrow Bringer by Lisa Mayer and can’t wait for her to write the sequel! Mayer’s strong writing style and fantastic character development drew me in immediately. Filled with betrayal, repentance, and forgiveness, this fantasy story has well-developed and interesting characters, beautiful setting details, and fantastic chapter endings that force you to turn the page.
Main character Evangeline and her family discover that she has leukemia and not long to live. While attempting to cling to a normal routine, her dreams take her to another world. Then her dreams turn out to be real! And Evangeline has something very important to do in this other world. So the adventure begins.
This story is action-packed with battles, conflict, and mystery. The Christian allegory and symbolism appeals to me, the same way as in the Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. I liked reading actual Scripture verses in the story. It is so well done!
Filled with emotional, moving scenes, this story brings out the beauty of true sacrificial love, sacrificing one’s self for others. And it gives a vivid reminder that God is ever by your side, despite the trials you are going through, and He loves you intensely, even when you fall.
Excellent story, well written
My 12 year old read all 3 books in a week. She loved the story and is looking forward to the next book.
This book was an intriguing story that felt pleasantly familiar, like a childhood memory, but wasn't predictable. The story had a good pace and never got too slow or bored me. I thought the characters were pretty well developed and I was able to feel invested in their plight. I also really liked that the author did not leave this story as a cliff hanger since it is meant to be the first in a series. I look forward to reading more books about Aletheia when they are published.
Wow. I love intelligent esoteric. Lisa s quantum, multi dimensional roller coaster ride was anything but slow. Readers need an imagination bandwidth greater than 4 percent to get to the top of the hill. Once over, a spiritual recognition has you engulfed in a light, dark war, aligned with a super divine power. The inflationary energy build of the two young protagonists tests your own limits of trust. The physics provoke corporAl verses advanced spiritual conundrums. This is one interesting author, who needs to engage her young realm jumpers many times over in a series. Gj
The characters are well-developed, the story line pulls you in, and the end is satisfying. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Narnia. A fresh take on Christian allegory with a likable heroine, good friends, surprising enemies, a little romance, lots of adventure. What is not to like?
